Dry Season Fishing: What You Actually Need (and What You Don’t)

Alright, let us make this easy for you.

If you’re booking a trip with us at JUST DOON IT., first thing you should know is: you don’t need to bring fishing gear. We’ve got that sorted already.

Rods, reels, tackle, lures, food, drink - we provide it all on the boat so you can just show up and fish. So this isn’t really a “what gear to bring” list. It’s more of a ‘what to actually focus on so you have a good day on the water’ situation… and what people usually overpack for no reason.

FIRST THING: YOUR GEAR IS COVERED

When you step on the boat, you’re not missing anything.

We set you up with properly matched gear for barra fishing conditions in the NT dry season. So you’re not guessing or stressing about whether your setup is right.

That means your job is simple:

👉 Turn up

👉 Listen to a quick rundown

👉 Start fishing

That’s it!

WHAT YOU SHOULD ACTUALLY BRING

Now that gear is out of the way, here’s what actually matters.

1. Sun Protection (Non-Negotiable Out Here)

If there’s one thing I’ll always tell people, it’s this. The NT sun is no joke, especially during dry season. Bring:

  • A proper hat (not just for photos)

  • Polarised sunnies (helps you see into the water too)

  • Sunscreen

  • Long sleeve UV shirt

Now on that last one, long sleeve shirts are honestly one of the best things you can wear out here. Keeps you protected and comfortable all day.

And if you want, we actually have JUST DOON IT. fishing shirts available - you can purchase these on the day. They’re designed for the conditions we fish in, so they’re lightweight, breathable, and built for long days on the water.

No rush, just plan ahead if you want one for your trip. Bring cash or we can take bank transfer.

You’ll enjoy the day a whole lot more when you’re not getting cooked.

2. Water & Hydration

We’ve got drinks on board, but if you have a special water bottle you love - feel free to bring that too.

Dry season heat sneaks up on you. You feel fine… then suddenly you’re not.

Stay ahead of it.

3. Comfortable Shoes

Think light, breathable, and practical.

You’re going to be moving around the boat, casting, maybe getting a bit of spray—so keep it simple. No need for anything fancy.

4. Phone / Camera (For the Memories)

Because let’s be real, you’re probably going to land a barra you’ll want a photo of.

And we don’t blame you for that.

WHAT YOU DON’T NEED TO BRING

This is where people usually overthink it.

1. Fishing Gear

You don’t need rods, reels, or tackle.

We’ve already selected gear that suits the conditions and the fish we’re chasing.

2. Overpacking

Big bags, extra tackle boxes, “just in case” gear—you won’t use it.

Keep it light. You’re on a boat, not moving house.

3. Heavy Clothing

It’s the dry season in the NT. You won’t need jackets or thick layers.

HOW WE DO IT AT JUST DOON IT.

The whole idea of JUST DOON IT. is simple.

You show up, we handle the setup, and you just focus on fishing.

No stress about gear. No guessing what works. No overpacking.

Just good water, good people, and the chance to hook into something that actually pulls drag. That’s it!

READY WHEN YOU ARE

So if you’re planning a trip this dry season, pack light, bring the basics, and let us handle the rest.

We’ll take care of the gear.

You take care of the fishing.
