At JUST DOON IT, fishing isn’t just about landing the biggest barra or enjoying a day on the water, it’s about making sure the Northern Territory’s waterways stay healthy for years to come. We love what we do, and we want future generations of fishos to enjoy the same epic fishing adventures. That’s why sustainability is at the heart of every charter we run.
Why Sustainable Fishing Matters
Fishing is fun, but it comes with responsibility. Overfishing and careless handling can put fish populations and ecosystems at risk. On our charters, we focus on preserving the environment while still giving our guests an unforgettable experience.
Every action counts - big or small!
How We Keep It Sustainable
Here’s how we make sure our charters are as eco-friendly as they are exciting:
1. Catch & Release Done Right - We love the thrill of a good catch, but we also love seeing those fish swim away healthy. Our crew uses fish-friendly nets, and proper handling techniques to ensure fish survive after release. Your barra can enjoy its freedom and grow big enough for your next trip! We want you to get that photo - so just be sure you LISTEN to Capt’n Doon at every moment so you can get a quick pick - and put the big girl back to fight another day.
If you want to learn more about why we catch & release and how it helps fish populations, check out our previous blog HERE.
2. Respecting the Environment - We avoid using reef and habitat destroying anchorage as much as we can - sometimes it can’t be avoided but we do try - we have an electric motor that keeps us steady and avoid sensitive habitats.
And of course, we always leave no trace, meaning no rubbish in the water or on the banks. A clean environment makes fishing better for everyone.
3. Educating Our Guests - Every charter is a chance to share our love for the outdoors responsibly. We teach our guests how to handle fish safely, know the size limits, and understand why sustainable practices matter.
By passing on this knowledge, we help create more conscious anglers.
Real Stories From the Water
In our previous charter, our client caught a beautiful barra, measured it carefully, and released it safely back into the river. They had one for the plate - but that was plenty - have you seen the slabs that come off a just on size barra? Huge.
The guests left thrilled, knowing they’d helped keep the fish population thriving and had a decent feed too. Moments like these remind us that responsible fishing is always rewarding.
