Before the chaos of runoff season kicks off and the salties start calling again, there’s this little window of calm — December.
It’s that time when the rods get a bit of a rest, the boat gets a once-over, and the crew finally has a moment to take a breath (and maybe a cold one, too). ;)
For most fishos, the lead-up to runoff is a mix of excitement and patience. You can feel it building! That buzz knowing big barra season is just around the corner.
But right now? It’s all about slowing down, soaking in the seasons (for us its the southern dry summer right now), and getting things sorted before the madness begins.
Time to Recharge: Mind, Boat & Eski
For NT fishos - December’s the perfect excuse to reset. Maybe it’s patching up the tinny, restocking the tackle box, or just making sure the boat trailer lights actually work this time.
It’s also a good time to take a break!
Catch up with mates, spend time with family, and enjoy the build-up (literally - the NT build up is on now) to Christmas without a 5 a.m. launch time.
Because once the runoff hits, sleep-ins are over and the adventures start rolling in fast.
Reflecting on a Cracking Year
2025’s been one for the books. From monster catches to the odd tangled line (special mention to Steve Muldoon, Jays’s Dad who caught our drone with his lure and it ended up in the drink), every trip’s got its story. December’s a good chance to look back at the year that was.
The early mornings, the laughs, the near misses, and the fish that still haunts your dreams. What’s your ‘one that got away' story?
For us at JUST DOON IT., it’s been a ride. Completing our first booked out runoff (and we are now booked out for 2026 too) as charter operators, to meeting awesome people at events like the COD Classic, we’re pretty stoked with how far we’ve come this year.
So if you’ve joined us on the water, grabbed a shirt, or even just followed along, Cheers to you!
Looking Ahead to 2026
Runoff season will be here before we know it, and it’s shaping up to be a ripper. We have had great rains (thanks Cyclone Fina). The bookings are rolling in, the big lady barra are waiting, and the crew’s ready to fire up for another season on the water.
So while December’s got us in a bit of a chill mode, don’t let it fool you, we’re already gearing up for big things.
If you’ve been thinking about ticking that NT fishing trip off your list, now’s the time to JUST DOON IT!
Wrapping It Up
December might not be the busiest month for fishing in the NT - but let me tell you - Jayson has been on the Murray at least 3 nights a week targeting cod since December 1st.
He’s gone cross eyed staring at that scope screen, and has landed fish over 80cm every time he has gone out.
For you - kick back, crack a cold one, and take in the quiet before the barra starts biting again and you are ready to come join us on the water.
If you are in the Wentworth NSW area, be sure to hit us up, come have a chat on our river bank - and ask us how to JUST DOON IT. in 2026.
Here’s to calm waters, good company, and an even better year ahead! See you out there in 2026 — it’s gonna be a beauty!
